We hope you're enjoying a fun and relaxing summer. Summer is a great time to travel. One of my favorite memories from childhood was when we would take the train to visit our family in Chicago. The train ride was always so fun and exciting. Meanwhile, one of our favorite children's books is Freight Train by celebrated author and artist, Donald Crews. Take a quick look at the simple Train Collage art lesson we created inspired by this colorfully illustrated book..  This art lesson is a great way to reinforce elements of design such as shape, color and texture for young artists in grades K-2. There are also cross-curricular connections to ELA, Math, Science and Careers. Finally, it is an art lesson that will help develop drawing, cutting, gluing and printmaking skills. 
1. Cut the scraps of construction paper into different shapes and glue them to the bottom of the paper.
2. Use the crayons to add details such as wheels to each cart, a train track, gravel, etc. 3. Cut the sponge into a cloud shape (Only adults should cut the sponge).  It's that time of the year when flowers are in full effect. With Mother's Day occurring during the month of May, flowers rule and serve as a great source of inspiration for art lessons. Here are three different floral lessons we did during the month of May.
After reading Planting a Rainbow by Lois Elhert, our 1st graders created flower collages using tissue paper. They also mounted the collages on gray construction paper and decorated the frames with tempera paint. We finished the paintings just in time for Mother's Day.

We are grateful for a new year and a new picture book story time series on our Youtube page. We are excited about sharing some of our favorite picture books this year as well as new art tutorials. Our first story is in honor of the great Dr. Martin Luther King and is entitled A Sweet Smell of Roses written by Angela Johnson and illustrated by Eric Velazquez. The illustrations in this books are fantastic and also inspired our latest Red Rose Portrait Art Lesson. Nature is an amazing source of inspiration; especially autumn, with it's lovely colors and textures. The works of art displayed below, can be used to create fall inspired art lessons. "On The St. Anne, East Canada" by Robert Scott Duncanson This beautiful landscape painting by Robert Scott Duncanson can be used to inspire a landscape art lesson. We offer a fun art history lesson that features him.  "Design Made at Arlie Garden" by Minnie Evans MInnie Evans was a folk artist whose art was inspired by her dreams. The leaves and flowers in this particular painting can be tied to the colors of leaves during fall. Our Great Art Lessons for the Creative Soul resource features a portrait lesson inspired by her work.  "Woman with Jug" by James A. Porter Renowned art historian, James A. Porter painted this lovely portrait. The leaf motif and color scheme in this painting has the feeling of fall. He is featured in our Great African-American Artists Coloring & Activity 2.0 resource.
We also feature a Fall inspired Bulletin Board Trim and Banner on our website. What kind of fall inspired lessons are you teaching in your art space? We love to use great children's books in the art room to foster creativity. Two of our latest art resources are inspired by two amazing children's books. The Spider Weaver: A Legend of Kente Cloth written by Margaret Musgrove and illustrated by Julia Cairns, is a wonderful story about the origins of kente cloth. After reading the story to your young artists, they will enjoy creating our 3D Spider's Colorful Web Art Lesson.
Red Yellow Blue & A Dash of White Too! is a colorful story written and illustrated by C.G. Esperanza. This story is a great way to introduce young artists to the color wheel. We made it!! Summer vacation has officially began for many school staff and students. Even though vacation has started, many educators and homeschoolers will be doing research for new art lessons, displays, etc. for the 2014-15 school year. Here's a simple idea to use in any classroom when you are working on a project or art lesson. When I taught art on the secondary level, I always posted the steps for each art lesson on one of the main bulletin boards in my classroom. This allowed each student to be reminded of the steps for each art lesson and cut down the amount of students who asked "What are we supposed to do again?......." A simple version of this is displayed below. An example of the completed demonstration painting is displayed with the lesson steps simply written above. The bulletin board also features our colorful Pencil Bulletin Board Trim as well as out C-R-C poster. Have a wonderfully restful and creative summer. 
 Today we honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a creative coloring activity. This art lesson is a great way for students to practice various shading techniques. In the example, we used a cross-hatch shading technique to create a gradiated color effect. While we used colored pencils, there are many techniques/media that can be used to color this illustration. We invite you to download this free coloring sheet and share your creative ideas for coloring it.
